Killing Honour, by Bali Rai
Killing Honour is the story of teenager Sat and his enquiry into what really happened to his older sister, Jas – has she disappeared of her own accord or does the new family she has married into have anything to do with it?
I found this book interesting as it is very different from what I usually read, and deals with quite adult issues such as; domestic violence, drugs, racism and swearing so I would recommend for ages 13 upwards.
The story jumps between the present day and the events that led up to it, which is very effective. The main character Sat means well but is mixed up in all this trouble, which doesn’t help him.
I think that Sat is a good character and an essential part of the story, as he determinedly seeks the truth of what really happened to his sister, even when everybody else is happy to believe lies.
Bali Rai has clearly thought out his characters, and they seem believable and complex. I think a strong point in this book is the language usage. The author captures the teenage dialogue well without overdoing it.
