Boy’s Don’t Cry, by Malorie Blackman

By on May 18, 2011

Boys don’t cry is a really powerful book about family. 17-year-old Dante is waiting for his A-Level results to arrive in the post one morning. If he does well, a promising future lies ahead – a place at university, a career as a journalist. There’s a knock at the door. But it’s not the postman. It’s Dante’s old girlfriend and she’s carrying a baby….. his baby. She’s had enough, so now it’s his turn.

Malorie Blackman is one of my favourite authors. I particularly liked her Noughts and Crosses series and this book didn’t disappoint. The chapters have alternate narrators: Dante and his younger brother Adam. I found this quite effective as you have to wait longer to discover the outcome of the end of chapter cliff-hangers.

My favourite character was Dante. It was interesting how he coped (or struggled to cope at times). I liked the way he changed throughout the course of the book. I would recommend this book to people aged 13 and up, and to fans of Malorie’s other books, or to anyone that wants to try something new.
