The Familiars: Animal Wizardry, by Adam Epstein and Andrew Jacobson
A tempting title and a captivating cover but what on earth is this book all about?
Well, Aldwyn , an ordinary alley cat, escaping, as usual, from yet another scrape involving the theft of fish, ends up being selected as a familiar for young Jack , a trainee wizard. Unlike the rest of the animals in the shop from which he is purchased Aldwyn does not seem to possess any magical powers and, relying on his wits to keep up the pretence, he embarks on some extraordinary adventures.
It is not long before Jack and his two young wizard friends are captured by the wicked Queen Loranella and so their familiars, Aldwyn together with Skylar, a blue jay, and Gilbert the frog set out on a hazardous mission to rescue all three of them.
This exciting book keeps the reader on a knife edge throughout. The traditional fight between good and evil is encapsulated in the pages of the work – the first in a trilogy by this pair of writers. A great deal of the magic and spells do seem somewhat reminiscent of the Harry Potter stories, but, that aside, this is a good story with some beautifully descriptive passages.
Young readers will undoubtedly eagerly await the next volume in the series.
